The Parumoana Arcade & Market Hall creates a new place on the waterfront for people to enjoy, a new symbol linking the sea to the city.
Porirua City’s greatest Asset is its natural harbour. For too long Porirua has turned its back on the water, it’s time to embrace the waterfront. The industrial warehouse building in front of Pataka Art Museum is being transformed into a new waterfront facility. A new Market Hall and Cultural centre to re-orientate and connect to Porirua’s water edge.
The project includes a new covered arcade through the weave of this vibrant new facility of market and hospitality offerings with space for art and music events. It marks the beginning of a new walkway that links the Town Centre and Pataka Art Museum to the Sea.
The Parumoana Arcade and Market Hall have been carefully designed using renewable materials and sustainable
design strategies to minimise its carbon footprint. The existing industrial building structure has been retained and materials reused including steel portal structure, concrete floor and walls.
A new arcade roof is shaped to capture natural sunlight at different times of the day and provide spaces that embrace and re-activate Porirua’s water edge. It is built from a highly efficient triangular timber structure with transparent ETFE roof. Natural cooling is achieved via passive ventilation and thermal mass of the reused floor slab to generate heat in winter. The fully insulated Market Hall roof combined with double glazing reduce winter cooling and overheating in summer. Photovoltaic panels provide supplementary power supply. Roof water is harvested for gardens and toilet flushing. Smart waste systems for re-cycling and separating waste are integrated into the building services.
